GLOSSARY OF EVENTS

RELAYS:

  1. OBSTACLE RELAY – A four-person relay that starts with a roll near the turnaround point and finishes in the middle…the obstacles are composed of hi-stepper, speed bounce, hurdles. This is a fast, scramble style relay with time penalties (.5 seconds) added for missed obstacles.
  2.  2 Lap Race (INDIVIDUAL) – A  2 lap race that starts and finishes at the middle of the gymnasium. This event involves 2 athletes running in two different heats.
  3. 4 x 1 RELAY – A four-person relay, which starts and finishes in the middle of the gymnasium. Each runner sprints 1 lap. This relay is about speed.
  4. 4 Lap Race (INDIVIDUAL) – A four lap race that starts and finishes at the middle of the gymnasium. This event involves 2 athletes running in two different heats.
  5. 4 x 1 Lap Hurdle Relay - A four-person relay that starts with a roll near the turnaround point and finishes in the middle of the gymnasium. Involving 3 - 4 hurdles. Each athlete,goes over 3 - 4 hurdles, bounces off the reversaboard, returns back over the hurdles, bounces off the reversaboard and passes the baton.
  6. Medley Relay – a four person relay, which starts and finishes in the middle of the gymnasium. Each athlete will run a designated distance (e.g. 4 Laps. 2 Laps, 2 Laps, 4 Laps). This tends to be a sprint-endurance relay.

JUMPS:

 1 Athlete per event per round

  1. STANDING LONG JUMP: Two athletes doing the classic jump (two-legged takeoff and landing). The best of three leaps is scored for each jumper.
  2. STANDING TRIPLE JUMP: A more complex jump (hop, step, jump) from a standing position with the best of three jumps being scored for each jumper.
  3. VERTICAL JUMP: Another classic fitness test; a two legged takeoff for a vertical reach. The best of three leaps is scored for each jumper.

AGILITY:

  1. SPEED BOUNCE: Quickness and agility fitness challenge, this event is essentially a lateral leap over a foam wedge for 20 seconds. The total number of bounces is recorded.

THROWS:

  1. LINEAR SHOT:  Traditional track and field event, students putt/push the shot for distance – NOT A THROW. The best of three throws is scored for each jumper.
  1. SOFT JAVELIN: A standing baseball throw for distance. Requiring some skills and familiarity, the best of three throws is scored for each thrower.
