GLOSSARY OF EVENTS

RELAYS

  1. OBSTACLE RELAY:  A four-person relay that starts with a roll near the turnaround point and finishes in the middle…the obstacles are composed of hi-stepper, speed bounce, hurdles. This is a fast, scramble style relay with time penalties (.5 seconds) added for missed obstacles.
  2. 2 x 2 RELAY:  A two-person relay which starts and finishes at the middle of the gymnasium, with each runner sprinting two laps. This relay is about speed.
  3. 4 x 1 RELAY :  A four-person relay, which starts and finishes at the middle of the gymnasium. Each runner sprints one lap. This relay is about speed.
  4. 6 LAP PAARLAUF:  A two-person relay which starts and finishes at the middle of the gymnasium. The baton must travel the 6 laps. Each runner must run 3 laps each. The two runners must complete 6 laps as a team (e.g. 3+3, 1+2+2+1, 1+1+1…). This can be a sprint or endurance relay (Play to your team’s strengths).
  5. OVER-UNDER RELAY:  A four-person relay that starts with a roll near the turnaround point and finishes in the middle of the gymnasium. Involving hurdles and tunnels …this tends to be a very fast and agile relay.
  6. GRAND PRIX RELAY:  A four-person relay with each person running 1 lap each. This is a fast over-under style relay in a circle around the gym. Composed of tunnels and hurdles.

JUMPS

  1. STANDING LONG JUMP:  Three athletes doing the classic jump (two-legged takeoff and landing). The best of three leaps is scored for each jumper.
  2. STANDING TRIPLE JUMP:  A more complex jump (hop, step, jump) from a standing position with the best of three jumps being scored for each jumper
  3. VERTICAL JUMP:  Another classic fitness test; a two legged takeoff for a vertical reach. The best of three leaps is scored for each jumper.

Agility

  1. BALANCE TEST:  A balance and stability challenge; each athlete strives to stay on the bar for a maximum of fifteen seconds on the right and left legs. Two efforts each.
  2. SPEED BOUNCE:  Quickness and agility fitness challenge, this event is essentially a lateral leap over a foam wedge for 20 seconds. The total number of bounces is recorded.

THROWS

  1. CHEST PUSH:  A medicine ball throw from a standing position for distance; akin to a basketball chest pass. The best of three throws is scored for each thrower.
  2. SITTING THROW:  A medicine ball overhead throw with a lightweight ball; involving a seated position and fixed foot position. The best of three throws is scored for each thrower.
  3. TARGET THROW :  An accuracy throw involving coloured bean-bags and target dishes. The scores for each dish are added up to produce a total for each thrower.
  4. SOFT JAVELIN:   A standing baseball throw for distance. Requiring some skills and familiarity, the best of three throws is scored for each thrower.
  5. LINEAR SHOT:  Traditional track and field event, students putt/push the shot for distance – NOT A THROW. The best of three throws is scored for each jumper.
